Take Your Work Outside: 3 free, wifi-enabled places to work outdoors in Boulder

September 14, 2017

Boulder is a beautiful place to live and work, it seems a shame to spend so many hours indoors! Spending time outdoors in the fresh air and natural light has been proven to reduce stress and improve cognitive function. For me, changing my surroundings can help me feel more creative and energized. Below, I’ve put together a list of my favorite places around Boulder that offer all the benefits of an outdoor escape as well as fast, reliable wireless internet.

Best Places to Work Outdoors in Boulder

#1 NCAR

NCAR’s Mesa Lab (DI02484)

I have to choose the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) as #1 because of its amazing location and breathtaking views of both the flatirons and the front range. NCAR offers public wifi and has seating areas both indoors and outdoors and it is absolutely FREE. NCAR is a good distance from any restaurants or coffeehouses, but it does offer a cafeteria that is open weekdays (except holidays) for breakfast, 8:00 am – 9:30 am and lunch, 11:30 – 1:30 pm (Cafeteria accepts only cash).

It’s also the perfect spot to take a break for a short (or long!) hike in the fresh mountain air. NCAR packs the perfect vibe of research and learning, the perfect atmosphere to promote both hard work and reflection.

#2 Pearl Street

places to work outdoors in Boulder

The City of Boulder provides a free, reliable high speed wifi internet connection throughout Pearl Street‘s famous walking mall. Bring a blanket and stretch out on the green lawn of the courthouse, or settle down on a comfy bench. Multiple coffee spots to keep you going, and plenty of choices for great food and entertainment when it’s time to take a break. Pearl Street is always a fun spot for people watching and provides a lovely view of the flatirons.

#3 Central Park & Civic Area (Along Boulder Creek Path)

places to work outdoors in Boulder

The City offers free outdoor wifi in the downtown Civic Area, an outdoors space that includes plenty of seating as well as large, comfortable green spaces to work. Set yourself up along Boulder Creek or near the public library, either way you will receive strong access to high speed internet while enjoying Boulder’s best outdoor features! Located close to local businesses, you are walking distance from lunch and coffee. Here is a map of the Civic Area’s free wifi zone:

Dog-Friendly Things to Do in Boulder

August 26, 2017
national dog day

It’s pretty great to be a dog in Boulder. Colorado canines enjoy everything that life could possibly offer — access to super fun dog parks, the very best hiking, great swimming spots, as well as more relaxing activities like hanging with their human pals at the local brewery. I don’t know about your dog, but mine assumes he is invited everywhere I’m going, and he is almost always right! For National Dog Day, I put together a list of my favorite things to do in and around Boulder with my best furry friend.

#1 Hike One of Boulder’s Beautiful Trails

Dogs are at their happiest outside, exploring the world. Boulder has a ton of amazing options for hikes — here are two of my favorites. The Tenderfoot Trail, a meandering, easy Boulder hike, perfect for enjoying some time outdoors with your dog of any age or ability. Totaling just a little under 2 miles there and back, this trail gains only 345 feet of elevation, and boasts amazing mountain views, as well as beautiful wildflowers. If your dog craves more of a challenge, Kohler Mesa Trail is a 4.1 mile loop trail located near Boulder, Colorado. A moderately difficult hike, this trail starts with a steep elevation climb, then backs off with an easier trail. With any hiking, be sure to bring plenty of water and a bowl to keep your pup hydrated and happy!

#2 Take Your Best Friend to the Park

dogs in boulder

Boulder offers four dog parks around town, there is sure to be one near you! East Boulder Dog ParkFoothills Dog Park & Valmont Dog Park all have separate areas for small and large breed dogs to meet up, play and have a fantastic time! There is also a fourth park, Howard Heuston Dog Park that is available to dogs with voice and sight control tags. For more information on the dog parks, click here. For information regarding voice and sight control tags, click here.

#3 Bring Your Furry Buddy to a Brewery

Many breweries in and around Boulder are dog-friendly! Avery Brewing is known for it’s dog-friendly patio seating, great service (wait staff will bring your dog a bowl of water!), as well as world-class craft brews. Boulder Beer offers outdoor seating for patrons with furry friends as well as a “dog door” to access the outdoor area. They are known for taking care of furry customers with a nice bowl of water, as well as offering their human friends delicious food and fresh beer. Outside of Boulder, 4 Noses Brewing in Broomfield is known for it’s dog-friendly tasting room. Since no food is served at the brewery, dogs are allowed inside! Not to worry, if you get hungry, there is almost always a food truck available (food truck schedule here). The brewery also offers incredible craft brews, spacious outdoor seating and close proximity to a public indoor dog pool, pet spa, pet supply shop and animal hospital.

#4 Take Your Dog Swimming

dogs in boulder

My dog hates the water, but for some dogs — water is absolute heaven! There are a handful of places to take your pup for a swim in and around Boulder. At the East Boulder Dog Park, there is a small pond where dogs are permitted to take a dip. West Lake at Twin Lakes in Gunbarrel (right across the street from Avery Brewing!) is a local favorite, a nice spot for both a hike and a swim. After Labor Day during the off season, Boulder Reservoir allows dogs to swim at the South Shore. Until then, check out nearby Coot Lake, which always allows dogs.

Happy National Dog Day!

Yogi and mystic, Sadhguru notes the importance of June 21 in the yogic tradition: “On the day of the summer solstice, Adiyogi [the first yogi] turned south and first set his eyes on the Saptarishis or Seven Sages, who were his first disciples to carry the science of yoga to many parts of the world. It is wonderful that June 21 marks this momentous event in the history of humanity.”

Drive-By Truckers have always been outspoken, telling a distinctly American story via craft, character, and concept, all backed by sonic ambition and social conscience. Founded in 1996 by singer/songwriter/guitarists Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood, the band have long held a progressive fire in their belly but with “American Band,” they have made the most explicitly political album in their extraordinary canon. On Saturday night, Drive-By truckers will be performing with Boulder’s own Rose Hill Drive at Chautauqua Auditorium.

Boulder:

A Colorado original and a Boulder favorite for over 20 years, KT’s BBQ serves Memphis-style BBQ with peppery vinegary sauce and amazing homestyle sides. Boulder Breweries – National Beer Day 2017 [Interactive Map]

April 7, 2017
Boulder Breweries National Beer Day

Boulder will rejoice on Friday, April 7th, 2017 – National Beer Day! This national holiday celebrates the day President Franklin Roosevelt took the first step toward ending Prohibition. On that fateful day – April 7, 1933 – the Cullen–Harrison Act was enacted after having been signed into law by FDR earlier that year. The law allowed Americans to brew and sell beer, so long as it remained less than 4.0% alcohol by volume. For the first time in 13 years, Americans were able to lawfully purchase beer once again.

To celebrate National Beer Day 2017, I’ve put together a guide of Boulder’s locally-owned breweries. Cheers!
